2027 NHL Draft Prospect Report – Charlie Murata (F)
Charlie MurataFlint Firebirds | C/RW | 2027 NHL Draft |D.O.B | 03 | 15 | 09 |6’0″ / 183 lbs
Murata is a smooth-skating, three-zone checking winger whose game is supported by his smart stickwork, creative handling ability in motion, and a quick release to top it all off. Although the boxscore may not suggest progression, there’s plenty to enjoy in the ins and outs of what he’s brought to the table for the Firebirds so far this season.
He’s a turnover machine, using his reach to disrupt retrievals and cause havoc for opposing defenders. There seems to be a natural problem-solving nature that flows seamlessly through Murata as a play driver, working off his linemates in transition with ease and always looking to control the pace of play with the puck on his stick. His attacking mindset, both on and off the puck, is very interior-driven, with the capability to not only find soft ice but stay above the puck more often than not, placing himself in advantageous positions to flip possession for quick strike opportunities. Details are the name of the game with Murata.
Offensively, his ability to process the game in motion allows him to create advantages without necessarily needing to force the issue. He’s calculated in his approach, using subtle changes of pace, quick handling adjustments, and his awareness of surrounding pressure to manipulate defenders and open up passing or shooting lanes. His quick release adds another layer to his offensive toolkit, particularly when working into soft pockets of ice where he can get pucks off before defenders have time to close. While the production hasn’t quite reflected the quality of his underlying play, the foundation is there for him to become a more consistent offensive contributor.
What makes Murata particularly intriguing is how seamlessly his offensive instincts translate into his defensive responsibilities. He doesn’t need the puck to influence a shift, consistently finding ways to disrupt possession, support his linemates, and turn defensive sequences into transition opportunities.
