Luca BlondaSudbury Wolves | RHD | 2027 NHL Draft | D.O.B 11/25/08 | 5’11” / 175 lbs Blonda is a mobile, offensive defenceman who plays with a goal line to goal line mindset, consistently looking to create advantages with his puck moving through the neutral zone, and activations. He is comfortable attacking downhill, using his feet to create separation and open up opportunities for himself and his teammates. His instinct to jump into the rush makes him a consistent activation threat, particularly when he identifies opportunities to create odd-man situations. Defensively, his positioning is generally sound. He uses his mobility to maintain a tight gap, angle attackers outside the dots, and limit access to dangerous areas. Despite being more of a mobile, puck-moving defender, he remains sturdy around the net front, making opposing forwards work to establish positioning and generate second-chance opportunities. While the tools are promising, his confidence in his handling ability can be both a gift and a curse, allowing him to escape pressure and generate transition opportunities, but occasionally leading tounnecessary turnovers. Developing a better understanding of when to simplify his game will be important, as will recognizing opportunities to step up defensively and kill zone exits before opponents can establish possession. At the end of the day, he possesses an intriguing combination of skating, puck skills, and two-way potential. His ability to impact play at both ends gives him a promising foundation, but translating those tools to higher levels will require greater consistency in his reads and execution. Until his skating, skills, and decision-making operate at the same pace over a full 60 minutes, growing pains should be expected as he adjusts to hockey beyond the CHL.
