Scouting Feed

Ioan Gheordanescu - DobberProspectsJuly 2025

The Calgary Wranglers have seen Stromgren grow from 27 points in 68 games during his rookie season to 49 points in 70 games during his sophomore season. That’s a solid progression, and if Stromgren continues to improve in 2025–26, he could earn a call-up during the season, giving Calgary fans more reason to believe he’ll slot into their middle-six within the next couple of years.

Carson Klein - DobberProspectsJune 2023

Stromgren has elite puck skills which is incredible considering he is 6-3. He is known for having some great tools to make him a dual threat, as Stromgren is more known for being a two-way player and is a big power forward who really commands the puck. Stromgren will look to adjust to North American ice surfaces and get used to the playing style inside the AHL next season. One thing that could affect him is the quickness of play, he doesn’t have the best footwork and stride, and this could lead him to being out of place positionally. He will likely start inside the AHL as he was only able to get in two games with the Wranglers this past season.

Carson Klein - DobberProspectsApril 2023

William Stromgren just signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Calgary Flames. He will report to the Calgary Flames affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, on Thursday. Stromgren was drafted in the second round, 45th overall, in 2021. Stromgren has been a busy guy as he has been on loans to different teams this year. One loan led him to BrynasIF J20, where he got a hat trick in the only game he played with them. For a 19-year-old to play 45 games in the top league in Sweden (SHL) is very impressive. Stromgren will get to experience some pro-level hockey as he will certainly play with the Wranglers in the AHL before they prepare for the playoffs.

-Carson Klein - DobberProspectsMarch 2023

Strömgren is currently playing in the SHL as a full-time player. He has a very limited role with the team and isn’t playing a lot of minutes as he is a bottom six forward with Brynas of the SHL. Strömgren has always been a gifted skater and been able to keep up with his competition. Strömgren was selected for the 2022- 2023 world juniors where he really struggled and didn’t play up to his standing. He was a top six forward at the start of the tournament, but he slowly started to fall down the lineup and didn’t play very much by the end of the tournament. He only finished the tournament with one point and overall was very disappointing, especially for a nineteen-year-old at the World Juniors which is a tournament dominated by nineteen years old.

Chris Fekete - DobberProspectsMay 2022

Strömgren will be remaining in Europe with Rogle next season for one more year before hopefully making the jump to North America. He was drafted last year in the second round, 45th overall. He is an intriguing prospect to continue to observe and we will see if he can take his talents to the next level. If there is one thing he needs to improve on, it is his defensive play. He needs to learn to support his teammates on the defensive end. Strömgren is young and has plenty of time to develop and fill out his lanky frame.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.
