Kevin Korchinski’s first NHL season had flashes of smooth skating, quick transitions, and the puck-moving ability that made him a top prospect however it also exposed some defensive inconsistencies. After logging 76 games as a rookie, and then 16 games as s sophomore, with players like Levshunov, Rinzel, and Vlasic are now ahead of him on Chicago’s depth chart. This year is a critical reset. Korchinski still projects as a top-four defenseman if he tightens up his defensive game and can handle tougher matchups with more composure. The offensive instincts and mobility are still there, and if he can rebuild confidence and round out his game, he’s capable of reclaiming a key role and power-play minutes in Chicago’s rebuild.

Kevin Korchinski keeps trending in the right direction with Rockford, sharpening both his offensive instincts and defensive game. He has always been a dynamic puck-moving defenseman, but his decision-making in his own zone has taken a big step forward. His MVP performance at the AHL All-Star Challenge was a reminder of his high-end skill set, and he is inching closer to becoming a full-time NHLer. With three goals and 24 assists in 56 games during the 2024-25 season, he is proving he can drive play at the professional level. He is setting himself up for a strong push toward a permanent roster spot during the 2025-26 season.

Korchinski is having a fantastic year with the Seattle Thunderbirds who are currently facing the Winnipeg Ice in the finals for the Memorial Cup. This year with the Thunderbirds Korchinski has amassed 73 points in 54 games (11 goals and 62 assists). There is a real possibility that Korchinski makes the Blackhawks out of training camp. His offensive hockey IQ is well above average, andhe is very confident in handling the puck out of the zone. He is not much of a shooter and is known to be a pass first type of player but with Bedard on his way into the Windy City that may be just what the Blackhawks are looking for in their 7th overall pick.

Krochinski has made significant strides over the past few years. He plays offensively with fearlessness and confidence. His tall stature gives him a long reach advantage over the opposition, which helps push the puck out of the defensive zone. His aggressiveness and ambition can at times put him in a vulnerable position however his offensive upside far outweighs the defensive breakdowns. Last season he played in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds posting nearly a point per game with 65 points (four goals and 61 assists) in 67 games. The Blackhawks recently signed him to an entry level contract though 2024-2025. Look to see Krochinski back in the WHL with the Thunderbirds for the 2022- 2023 campaign.

Korchinski has been selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the seventh overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.
