Kumpulainen’s first North American season was split between Iowa’s ECHL and AHL affiliates, and the results were mixed. He was functional in the ECHL with 16 points in 24 games, but managed just five points in 48 AHL appearances – a conversion rate that tells you where his game currently sits relative to that level. The skating limitations identified throughout his career remain the primary obstacle; without the separation to get where he needs to be in the defensive structure, his two-way contributions at pro pace are compromised. An NHL role looks remote at this stage, and a return to Finland may appeal before long. A dynasty cut in most formats.

Kumpulainen spent the 2023–24 season with the Oshawa Generals of the OHL, finishing just under a point per game, before returning to Finland to join Pelicans in the Liiga. In 2024–25, he posted 16 points in 48 games, with 18 penalty minutes and a minus-4 rating. He struggled to drive play, recording just a 43% Corsi, and ranked 11th among team forwards in total ice time and 10th in power play ice time. The 20-year-old center’s offensive instincts and large frame remain assets, but his impact away from the puck and ability to influence possession will need to improve. He also represented Finland at the world juniors, recording two points in six games. With refinement, he could top out as a middle-six NHL forward. Victor Nuño

The Minnesota Wild agreed to loan Kumpulainen, who signed his entry-level contract with the Wild on March 18, 2024, to the Lahti Pelicans of the SM-liiga in Finland on a two-year contract.
