Ritchie arrived from Colorado in the Brock Nelson deal – a significant return that immediately improved the Islanders’ prospect pool and tells you how New York sees his potential. The season has been a bounce-around – reassigned to Bridgeport early, called up, moved to wing alongside Horvat and Heineman where the coaching staff identified his playmaking as a genuine asset on that top line, then back down to center the third line. The production is modest at 19 points in 50 games, but the context of a young player finding his footing in a new organization makes that more understandable than alarming. Alongside Cole Eiserman, Ritchie gives the Islanders their two most offensively upside-laden prospects – and while the former carries the higher ceiling, Ritchie arguably offers more certainty in his projection. A middle-six center with 20-to-30 goal upside and 50 points as a realistic ceiling, his two-way structure and faceoff projection give him staying power across formats. A useful dynasty asset with a more stable floor than his current numbers suggest.

The Islanders made a huge move at the 2025 NHL trade deadline that sent Brock Nelson to the Avalanche and, in return, added a piece to their prospect pool that immediately improves their stock. Ritchie is a top prospect with really great upside potential, as well as a stable floor that this Islanders prospect pool has been missing for quite some time. Although he may become a top-line forward who can produce at a point-per-game or better, he is more likely to develop into a middle-six forward who provides important depth scoring. Ritchie joins Cole Eiserman as the two prospects in the Islanders organization with the most offensive upside that could grow. However, arguably, Ritchie has a little more certainty in his projections than Eiserman, adding a bit more stability and security to this prospect pool.
The New York Islanders acquired on the NHL Trade Deadline as a key piece in return for Brock Nelson. Ritchie will finish his OHL career with the Oshawa Generals in pursuit of a Championship and is slated to play in the AHL for the 2025-26 campaign. He instantly becomes the Islanders top prospect along with Cole Eiserman.
The WJC is huge opportunity for a prospect’s stock to rise… or fall. Ritchie and Team Canada were eliminated in the quarter finals, and while it was encouraging to see Ritchie trusted with some big minutes throughout the tournament on a scoring line right down to the finish, he couldn’t capitalize on his opportunities and finished the tournament with just 2 points in 5 games. He remains the top prospect in Colorado’s cupboard but the clutch factor just wasn’t there during this best-on-best display.
Ritchie will wear an A for Team Canada at the 2025 WJC. After a breakout campaign last year, he has elevated his offense to another level, sitting just under 2 points per game going into the WJC. One unexpected jump this season has been penalty minutes, which have been boosted particularly by multiple outings with roughing and unsportsmanlike penalties. Hopefully this is just a case of him trying to maintain an NHL compete-level and coming on too strong – a best-on-best tournament will be a good indicator of if he can walk the line with this competitiveness.
