Bio

An offensive defenseman with elite creativity, deception, and handling skill, but his defensive game needs an overhaul for him to not project as a liability in his own zone at the NHL level.

Scouting Feed

Chris Babos  - DobberProspectsMarch 2026

Hutson signed his entry-level contract on March 15. He scored a goal into an empty net for his first pro goal into an empty net during his NHL debut on March 18. Hutson is a player to watch (or grab in dynasty leagues) and he is expected to grow into an important piece for the Capitals defensive group.

Pat Quinn - DobberProspectsSeptember 2025

Everyone is not on the new Hutson train as Cole led the NCAA in defensemen scoring, with 48 points in 39 games, in his first NCAA season. He also led the WJC in scoring, and was the first defensemen ever to do so. Can he replicate or exceed his amazing 2024-25?

Pat Quinn - DobberProspectsMarch 2025

Hutson was named the “Rookie of the Year” for Hockey East in 2024-25, an award his older brother Lane won two seasons prior. He finishes his season with 39 points in 34 games, to finish first on his team, and third in the NCAA, for points by defensemen.

Pat Quinn - DobberProspectsFebruary 2025

Hutson was the top scorer for Team USA at the World Junior Championship, the first defenseman to lead it in scoring, with 11 points in seven games and a constant stand out whenever he was on the ice. He is also tied for second in scoring at Boston University with 26 points in 24 games. That is also 11 points higher than the next closest defenseman on the team. Additionally, since coming back from the WJC, Hutson has 12 points in eight games. With the Capitals’ contract situation on defense, there is no clear path to the roster until, at least, 2026-27, so Hutson may remain in the NCAA another year or be willing to play in the AHL until Washington deems him ready for the big leagues.

Pat Quinn - DobberProspectsDecember 2024

Hutson has made Team USA’s roster for the World Junior Championship and looks to be one of the team’s top players for the tournament.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.
