Bio

A solid offensive winger with a high compete level. Needs to work on his two-way game—projects as a bottom-six forward.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

Scouting Feed

Wetsch signed a three-year entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks in May 2026. His deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $997K and runs through the 2028-29 season.

Wetsch has taken a clear step forward in his second WHL season, posting 22 goals and 71 points in 63 games as captain of a good Kelowna team – a meaningful uptick from last year’s 52 points, with the assist total in particular suggesting improved playmaking as his role has grown. More forecheck and inside-driven than most WHL forwards, he plays a smart, low-risk game that doesn’t always generate highlight-reel moments but tends to produce results. The 75 penalty minutes add some banger value on top of the offensive production. Whether there is enough upside to stick as a regular NHLer remains an open question – the projectable traits are there, but the ceiling isn’t obvious yet. If the forecheck game continues to develop, he offers something different to a Sharks pipeline that skews toward skill over physicality. A watchlist candidate in leagues that value peripheral categories.

Wetsch is one to watch in a stacked San Jose pipeline, who certainly doesn’t hear his name mentioned among the Musty’s and the Chernyshov’s who get more attention. One shouldn’t expect he would keep up with those two offensively, but he has a good path to be a useful bottom six forward in due time. In 2024-2025, Wetsch provided 33 goals and 19 assists for 52 points in 68 games, while collecting 68 PIMS. During the Hitmen’s playoff run, he scored five goals and added an assists in 11 games, while firing 42 pucks on net. In a league that tracks offensive output, Wetsch likely goes undrafted, but managers may want to watchlist him where banger stats are valuable.

The San Jose Sharks drafted Wetsch in the third round (82nd overall) in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
